Boat Safety Tips for Summer

Taking your boat out on the water is a perennial summer pastime. But even if you’re an extensively experienced nautical navigator, safety and planning must be top priorities. Accidents and mishaps occurring while isolated on the water can be particularly problematic and even deadly. Before leaving land, certain precautions are critical.

6 Safety Steps for Summer Boating

Whether you own a sailboat, pontoon, Jet Ski or other type of vessel, certain safety precautions may be essential. Consider the following:

  1. Check the forecast. Rough seas, storms and other inclement conditions can turn a peaceful day on the water into a fight for your life. Limit your chances of being away from shore during bad weather by monitoring the forecast in advance.
  2. Maintain your boat. Falling behind on maintenance and failing to regularly verify that your vessel is in suitable condition are recipes for disaster. Check engines, sails, electronics and other key systems to avoid accidents and breakdowns.
  3. Understand capacity. Make sure you’re aware of your boat’s weight capacity and strictly adhere to such guidelines.
  4. Keep essentials on board. Pack emergency supplies in case you get stranded, including drinking water, nonperishable food, a first-aid kit, flashlights and extra batteries. Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher and life jackets on board as well.
  5. Avoid inebriation. Just as is the case when driving a car, operating a boat while intoxicated is illegal. Additionally, it could impair your judgment and motor skills, significantly increasing your risk of collisions with other vessels and other accidents.
  6. Check your insurance. Understanding and securing appropriate boat insurance is critical. Don’t automatically assume that renewing your previous coverage will be sufficient every year. Check with your agent before heading out on aquatic adventures this summer.
